President's Message from Mary Hodges

The first time I was ever on the Texas A&M campus was in June, 2002 when our twins attended New Student Conference. My family’s roots have long been in west Texas. Abilene is only about two and a half hours from that other school in Lubbock.

As we drove into College Station that June afternoon the first thing I saw was the water tower welcoming us to Aggieland. I immediately became sick at my stomach. How could one be happy about sending their firstborn children to College Station to go to school? You must remember that this university is four and a half hours away from my nest. Could any place on earth be any worse? We have three universities in Abilene. Why could my children not choose one of those?

Let me backtrack for a moment. Colby, one of the firstborn, had a fourth grade teacher who was an Aggie. His class was thoroughly indoctrinated in the ways of Texas A&M during that school year. For Christmas that year Colby received a Texas A&M Starter jacket. The rest is history. The end result is we now have three Aggie graduates and an Aggie daughter-in-law.

Thanks to a teacher at my husband’s school I was introduced to Abilene Aggie Moms in the fall of 2002. I did not want to go to that first meeting, but I agreed to go with my friend. These women were just a little bit too cheery about being an Aggie Mom. As I came home and began thinking about the evening I came to realize that being an Aggie Mom would be a way to stay connected to my “far away” children and the university that they so loved.

Being involved in my local club has given me the opportunity to meet other Aggie Moms, share the victories and struggles of our children, support our children and the university, and make lifelong friends. I never imagined being an Aggie Mom would be such a blessing.

Even though my children are now graduates of this wonderful university, I continue to be an Aggie Mom. When contemplating a theme for this Federation year these words kept coming to mind repeatedly…ONCE AN AGGIE MOM – ALWAYS AN AGGIE MOM.

In closing I would like to thank my husband, Steve. He is always willing to go the extra mile when it comes to Aggie Moms. I couldn’t do life without him. To my children Colby ’06, Cinnamon ’06 and Casey ’08, thanks for the blessing of being your mom. I love you all!!

I would like to sincerely thank Helen Halliburton, Kathy Steffen, Mary Cooper and Becky Demeter for their love and inspiration. Also, we would not be here today without the past leadership of the Former Federation Presidents. Thank you to all of these sweet ladies because ONCE AN AGGIE MOM – ALWAYS AN AGGIE MOM.

Thank you, again, for the honor and privilege of serving as your Federation President for the coming year.

Thanks and Gig’em

Mary Hodges
